By Jennifer Sedlak, Intern 2017 Tax Season

My internship at Barnes Wendling CPAs didn’t just meet my expectations but far exceeded them. The number of responsibilities I was given and trusted with was a definite confidence booster. As a student, you often perceive internships as coffee runs and endless copying, but my supervisors assigned me with various tasks, including business returns, trust returns, and individual returns. I even went out on an audit! I learned way more about the public accounting industry than I could have ever hoped to learn.

The most challenging moment I had during my internship was going from the classroom environment to the office environment. Using everything I learned at Tri-C in the exact business I studied for was a little scary, but I knew that I could handle it with the help of all my new co-workers.

What I learned about public accounting was that it takes the entire team’s efforts to accomplish a job. The clients rely on our collective skills to prepare their tax returns, financial statements, audits, and more. I learned, even if you do not know the answer to something, there are many people in the office with their doors open ready to help you.

During my internship, I learned a great deal about myself. I learned that I am not afraid to ask anyone questions. I discovered and solidified my love for preparing tax returns, especially estate and trust returns. I learned that if I work hard and trust myself then the end product will be noticed by others. I gained a great deal of confidence during my internship.

My most memorable experience at Barnes Wendling CPAs was participating in all of their wonderful events. The Christmas party was a blast, and I got to meet my future co-workers before my internship started. The March Madness event where we raised money for Legal Aid Society of Cleveland was a lot of fun and very wholesome. When we raised money for Harvest for Hunger with an ice cream social and putt-putt, it was very fulfilling. Being a part such a caring and charitable firm is something I will never forget.

I would most definitely refer everyone to Barnes Wendling CPAs for an internship opportunity. I would tell them that everyone from staff to director is helpful, patient, knowledgeable, and genuinely cares about your experience and your career path. They provide a very pleasant work environment and do not treat you like just an intern. They treat you like a teammate. Barnes Wendling CPAs was the stepping stone I needed to achieve my goals in the accounting industry, and I couldn’t be more grateful for everything they did for me!
