With the approach of tax season, small businesses must be aware of identity theft. The IRS, state tax agencies, and the nation’s tax industry joined together to warn small businesses to be on-guard against a growing wave of identity theft and W-2 scams. This week, Dec. 3 – 7 was designated as “National Tax Security Awareness Week” to make tax payers and tax professionals more cautious of these scams. A common theme for identity thieves is the use of stolen Employer Identification Numbers (EIN) to create fake Forms W-2 to file with fraudulent individual tax returns.
