History

The firm name had its origins in 1946 when Charles C. Barnes joined the small office of Horatio Mitchell. Follow our timeline from 1917 to present.

  • Horatio Mitchell, CPA, rents an office

    in the Schofield Building on E. 9th Street in Cleveland, Ohio. He hires a part-time secretary. 

    1917

  • Charles C. Barnes is hired

    and becomes partner in 1946. The firm continues under his name. 

    1941

  • Robert E. Wendling joins Charles C. Barnes

    1947

  • Robert E. Wendling becomes a partner

    and the firm's name is changed to Barnes & Wendling. 

    1954

  • The firm moves

     to the National City Bank Building on Euclid Avenue in Cleveland. 

    1959

  • G.M. Cook & Associates

    and Barnes & Wendling decide to share office space. 

    1965

  • G.M. Cook & Associates merges

     with Barnes & Wendling under the name Barnes, Wendling & Cook. 

    1966

  • The firm merges with C. Patrick O’Connor

    and the name changes to Barnes, Wendling, Cook and O’Connor. Patrick O’Connor becomes president. 

    1983

  • The firm opens an additional office

    in Elyria, Ohio, and moves into a new building on North Abbe Road. 

    1984

  • The firm is incorporated in the State of Ohio

    and the Cleveland office moves to the Charter One Bank Building on Superior Avenue, where it remains for the next 26 years.  

    1986

  • Anthony J. Sejba is named president

    1990

  • The firm celebrates 50 years

    1996

  • Jeffrey D. Neuman is named president

    2000

  • The firm merges

    with Mitchell Zunich & Co. of Elyria, Ohio.

    2001

  • On April 15, ground is broken

    for a new building in Sheffield Village, Ohio. 

    2002

  • The firm merges

    with Jenkins Hakes and Associates of Norwalk, Ohio. 

    2004

  • The firm continues its growth

    merging with Koby & Co. Inc. CPAs of Sandusky, Ohio. 

    2005

  • In May, the Sandusky office moves

    to Timber Commons Drive, and merges with Wrabel & Company of Middleburg Heights, Ohio. 

    2006

  • The firm merges with Hanck & Associates of Sandusky, Ohio

    2009

  • The firm moves its Cleveland office

    to the U.S. Bank Building on Euclid Avenue in the Playhouse Square District. 

    2012

  • The firm celebrates 75 years

    2021

  • The firm names its first female president

    Rosemary Rehner

    2024

  • The firm merges with Mark P. Stanton, CPA

    of Palatka, Florida, and retains a presence in his office at 113 N. 2nd Street.
